Pattern notes:

This pattern comes in 4 sizes from baby (15-18”) to adult L sizes (24-25”).
Skill Level: Intermediate. it’s mostly stockinette stitch with color changes.
The hat is worked in the round with a circular needle, bottom-up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary. First work rib, then work colorwork in stockinette stitch. A pom is attached to the top.

SIZE

Baby (15-18”/38-46 cm)
Child (19-21”/48-54 cm)
Adult (21-23”/54-59 cm)
Adult L (23-25”/59-64 cm)

MATERIALS:

Yarn Drops Nepal (65% wool, 35% alpaca) 82 yds/1.75 oz (75 m/50 g) or any other aran yarn.

  • Deep ocean mix 8905 – 1 skein;
  • Off White uni colour 0100 – 1 skein;
  • Blush mix 8912 – 1 skein;
  • Forget-me-not uni colour 8783 – 1 skein.

US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles or US 4 (3.5mm) double pointed needles.
US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles or US 7 (4.5mm) double pointed needles.

GAUGE:

10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 inch = 20 stitches in width and 24 rows/rounds in height with stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Baby (15-18”/38-46 cm)

Brim.
Cast on 72 stitches on US 4 (3.5mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of the round.

1st rnd: Work 1×2 rib (k1, p2) around. (see pic A1)
Work 1×2 ribbing for 24 rnds or near 4” (10 cm).

Later when you fold the brim, the wrong side 2 knit / 1 purl will be showing and give a beautiful 2/1 rib pattern.

Body of hat:
Start to knit in stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5 mm).
Knit rnds 1-28 of A2, noting 12-st rep will be worked 6 times.

Shape top:
Then knit rnds 1-3 of A3, reading rows from right to left, noting 4-st rep will be worked 18 times.

1st rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 36 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern. 36 sts
3rd rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 18 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.

POM POM:
Make one pom pom with white (or any other, if you like) and a diameter of approx 7-8cm.
Sew the pom pom to the top of the hat.

Child (19-21’/48-54 cm)

Brim:
Cast on 84 stitches on US 4 (3.5mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of the round.

1st rnd: Work 1×2 rib (k1, p2) around. (A1)
Work 1×2 ribbing for 24 rnds or near 4” (10 cm).

Later when you fold the brim, the wrong side 2 knit / 1 purl will be showing and give a beautiful 2/1 rib pattern.

Body of hat:
Start to knit in stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5 mm).
Knit rnds 1-30 of A2, noting 12-st rep will be worked 7 times.

Shape top:
Then knit rnds 1-3 of A3, reading rows from right to left, noting 4-st rep will be worked 21 times.

1st rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 42 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern. 42 sts
3rd rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 21 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.

POM POM:
Make one pom pom with white (or any other, if you like) and a diameter of approx 7-8cm.
Sew the pom pom to the top of the hat.

Adult S (21-23’/54-59 cm)

Brim:
Cast on 96 stitches on US 4 (3.5mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of the round.
1st rnd: Work 1×2 rib (k1, p2) around. (A1)
Work 1×2 ribbing for 40 rnds or near 5,5” (14 cm).

Later when you fold the brim, the wrong side 2 knit / 1 purl will be showing and give a beautiful 2/1 rib pattern.

Body of hat:
Start to knit in stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5 mm).
Knit rnds 1-30 of A2, noting 12-st rep will be worked 8 times.

Shape top:
Then knit rnds 1-11 of A4, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 12 times.

1st rnd: *K2tog. K6. Rep from * around. 84 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.

Beige – 1 skein
Green – skein
Red – 1 skein

GAUGE:

10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 inch = 22 stitches in width and 28 rows/rounds on US 2.5 (3 mm) in height with stockinette stitch, after blocking.

K = knit
M1 = make 1 (increase by 1 stitch. Insert the left needle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Knit the stitch

Cast On:

On US 1.5 (2.5 mm) with red color (using any stretchy cast on method) cast on 42 + 1 stitches. Join in the round, making sure not to twist stitches. Transfer the extra stitch from right hand needle to the left and pass left st. over the right. Pass st. again to the right needle and pull the yarn. Place marker to indicate beginning of round.

If you use DPS needle: divide sts evenly on needles.
If you use magic loop: 21 sts on each needle.

Cuff

Knit 1×1 rib (k1, p1) for 2/5 in or any other desired length.

Then knit ribbing 1/1 for 4 rows, using red yarn
Rnds 34-37: k1, p1: 46 sts.
Cast off using your preferred method of stretchy bind off. Weave in all the ends.

Thumb:

Move 19 stitches on the waste yarn onto size 2.5 (3 mm) needle. Pick up and knit 1 st between back and palm of mitt (20 sts).
Rnd 1: red x 20: 20 sts
Change to smaller ndls and knit ribbing 1/1 for 4 rows.
Rnds 2-5: k1, p1: 20 sts

Cast off using your preferred method of stretchy bind off. Cut the yarn. Weave in all the ends.

Left mitt

Work second mitt the same, but using chart B

FINISHING

Using red yarn embroidery (duplicate stitch) holle berry (see chart A_1/B_1).

Soak in lukewarm water with a mild wool wash for 10-20 minutes. Press dry by rolling it up in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

SHORT OVERVIEW
The hat is worked in the round with circular needle, bottom up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary. First work rib 2/1, then work stripes in stockinette stitch. A pom pom is attached to the top.

BRIM:
With Goldenrod color cast on 90 (94) stitches. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round. 1st rnd: Row 1: Work 2×1 rib (k2, p1) around. Work 2×1 ribbing for 8 rnd or near 1” (2,5 cm), inc 8 (14) sts (yarn over) evenly across last rnd = 98 (108) sts.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch. On the next round knit the yarn over twisted to prevent holes.

BODY OF HAT:
Knit rnds 1-40 (A1, A2), reading rows from right to left. Work A1 over the next 58 stitches, work A2 over the next 40 (= 4 repeats of 10 stitches), 50 (5 repeats of 10 stitches).
In 40-th rnd decrease 2,(4) sts to provide 8-st rep in A3 chart = 96(104)sts

SHAPE TOP:
Knit rnds 1 to 9 of A3, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 12, (13) times.
1st rnd: * K2tog. K6. Rep from * around. 84, (91) sts.
2nd rnd : Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: * K2tog. K5. Rep from * around. 72, (78) sts.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.

10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 inch = 24 stitches in width and 28 rows/rounds on US 2.5 (3 mm) in height with stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Thumb:

Move 19 stitches on the waste yarn onto size 2.5 (3 mm) needle. Pick up and knit 1 st between back and palm of mitt (20 sts).
Rnd 1: k20: 20 sts
Rnds 2-4: k1, p1: 20 sts
Cast off using your preferred method of stretchy bind off. Cut the yarn. Weave in all the ends.

Work second mitt the same.

Soak in lukewarm water with a mild wool wash for 10-20 minutes. Press dry by rolling it up in a towel. Lay flat to dry.
