Big Mushrooms Hat [FREE Knitting Pattern]

One more Mushroom, this is the quickest of my mushrooms projects! 2-3 hours if you are beginner or 30 minutes if you are advanced knitter and the hat is ready! Amazing, isn’t it? So, let’s start!

Pattern notes:

This pattern comes in 6 sizes from newborn (12-15”) to adult L sizes (23-25”).
Skill Level: Intermediate, it’s mostly stockinette stitch with color changes.
The hat is worked in the round with a circular needle, bottom-up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary.First work rib, then work colorwork in stockinette stitch. A pom is attached to the top.

SIZE

New born -3m (12-15”/30-38cm):
3-12 months (15-18”/38-46 cm)
Toddler (18-20”/46-51 cm)
Child (20-21”/51-54 cm)
Adult (21-22,5”/54-57 cm)
Adult L (23-25”/58-64 cm)

MATERIALS:

Lion Brand Wool – Ease Thick and Quick or any other super bulky weight (6) yarn suitable for US 13 (9mm)

COLORS:

  • Grey – 1
  • White– 1
  • Red – 1

Circular or dnp knitting needles: US 13 (9 mm) for colorwork
Circular or dnp knitting needles: US 10,5 (6,5 mm) for the rib

GAUGE:

10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 inch = 10 stitches in width and 14 rows/rounds in height with stockinette stitch, after blocking.

New born -3m (12-15”/30-38cm)

Brim.
With grey color cast on 32 stitches on Us 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round.

Knit rnds 1-6 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 16 times.

Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-11 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 4 times.

Then knit rnds 1-5 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 4 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 24sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.
5th rnd:*K. K2tog. K. K2tog. Rep from * around. 16 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely

3-12 months (15-18”/38-46 cm)

Brim.
With grey color cast on 40 stitches on Us 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round.

Knit rnds 1-6 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 20 times.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-11 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 5 times.

Then knit rnds 1-9 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 5 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 30sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.
5th rnd:*K. K2tog. K. K2tog. Rep from * around. 20 sts.
6th rnd: Work even in pattern.
7th rnd: Work even in pattern
8th rnd: Work even in pattern.

Toddler (18-20”/46-51 cm)

Brim.
With grey color cast on 40 stitches on Us 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round.

Knit rnds 1-6 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 20 times.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-13 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 5 times.

Then knit rnds 1-9 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 5 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 30 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.
5th rnd:*K. K2tog. K. K2tog. Rep from * around. 20 sts.

Knit rnds 1-6 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 24 times.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-15 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 6 times.

Then knit rnds 1-9 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 6 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 36 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.

Knit rnds 1-8 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 24 times.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-19 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 6 times.

Then knit rnds 1-9 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 6 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 36 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.

With grey color cast on 56 stitches on Us 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round.
Knit rnds 1-10 of A1 (ribbing), noting 2-st rep will be worked 28 times.

Then start to knit in stockinette stitch (using US 13 / 9 mm needles).

Body of hat and shape top:
Knit rnds 1-19 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 7 times.

Then knit rnds 1-10 of A3, noting 8-st rep will be worked 7 times.
1st rnd: *K. K2tog. K2. K2tog. K. Rep from * around. 42 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: Work even in pattern.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.
5th rnd:*K. K2tog. K. K2tog. Rep from * around. 28 sts.
6th rnd: Work even in pattern.
7th rnd: Work even in pattern
8th rnd: Work even in pattern.

POM POM:
Make one pom pom with grey, white (or any other) color. Sew the pom pom to the top of the hat.

Crochet Mushroom Beret [FREE written pattern & video tutorial]

Description: This delightful design features a radiant red beret adorned with whimsical white mushroom spots, creating a cozy and elegant accessory that adds a touch of woodland charm to your style.

Size: One size only. Fits the average adult females head (22-23 in)

Materials Needed:

  • Aran / Medium (4) yarn: red (120g), white (30g)
  • Crochet hook 5 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
SK=skip
REP=repeat
ST=stitch
sl st = slip stitch
DEC= decrease / may also be called “crochet two together”

Gauge (hook size 5 mm(H): 14 dc and 7 rows = 10 cm in double crochet

Pattern:

Beret

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first st), dc 11 in the circle.
Chain 3 at beginning of each row count as one stitch.
Pull the tail to close the magic circle, join with sl st on top of chain 3. (12st)

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st. (24 st)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (36 st)

Rnd 4: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 2 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (48 st)

Rnd 5: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 3 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (60 st)

Rnd 6: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 4 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (72 st)

Rnd 7: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 5 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (84 st)

Rnd 8: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 6 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (96 st)

Rnd 9: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 7 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (108 st)

Rnd 10: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 8 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (120 st)

Stop here and measure – should be around 30 cm (12in)

Rnd 11: ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st. (120 st)

Rnd 12: ch 3, dc in the next 7st, *dc dec, dc in the next 8 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (108 st)

Rnd 13: ch 3, dc in the next 6st, *dc dec, dc in the next 7 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (96 st)

Rnd 14: ch 3, dc in the next 5st, *dc dec, dc in the next 6 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (84 st)

Rnd 15: ch3, dc in the next 4 sts, *dc dec, dc in the next 5 st, rep from* around, join with sl st. (72 st)

Rnd 16: ch3, dc in the next 3 sts, *dc dec, dc in the next 4 st, rep from* around, join with sl st. (60 st)

Stop here and measure – should be around 17 cm (6.5in)

Rnd 17 (change the color): ch, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (60 st)
Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.

Sports (make a few different sizes spots)

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first st), dc 11 in the circle. (12st)

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st. (24 st)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (36 st)

Place spots as you like and sew them.
