Materials you’ll need for this colorwork hat knitting project
– US 8 (5mm) circular needles
– US 6 (4 mm) circular needles or size to obtain gauge

Any aran weight yarn (1 skein is 50g)
White 3 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6)
Grey – 1

GAUGE:
10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 inch = 17 stitches in width and 22
rows/rounds on US 8 (5 mm) in height with stockinette
stitch, after blocking.

Skill: Intermediate

Notes
The top is worked with circular needle, bottom up. Front and back pieces are worked separately. Zodiac sign is on the front side.

Zodiac sign Top Knitting Pattern

FRONT PIECE:

Brim:
With white color on US 6 (4 mm) needles cast on 84 (92,100, 108, 116, 132) stitches.
REMEMBER the first st is always slip, the last is always knit.
Row 1: sl st, K2, P2, K3, turn work.
Row 2: sl st, P2, K2, P2, K, turn work.
Repeat 1-2 rows for 7 times total (14 rows).

Body:
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch on US 8 (5mm).
Row 15: all knit. On this row decrease 14-16-16-18-18-22 stitches evenly on the row 70-76-84-90-98-110
stitches
Row 16: all purl.
Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7-9-11-13-15-17 cm from the cast-on edge, with the next row from the right side.

Start to knit colorwork (chart A).
Row 1: Work stockinette stitch over the next 18-21-25-28-32-38 stitches, work A1 over the next 34 stitches, work stockinette stitch over the last 18-21-25-28-32-38 stitches, reading rows from right to left, turn work.
Row 2: Work stockinette stitch over the next 18-21-25-28-32-38 stitches, work A1 over the next 34 stitches, work stockinette stitch over the last 18-21-25-28-32-38 stitches, reading rows from left to right, turn work.

Continue 1-42 rows and then continue with stocking stitch
Row 43: all knit
Row 44: all purl
Repeat until the piece measures 21-23-24-25-26-26 cm from the cast-on edge, with the next row from the right side.

Armholes decreases:
Cast off 2-2-4-4-6-6 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the armholes = 66-72-76-82-86-98 stitches.
Decrease 1 stitch on each side of each row from the right side a total of 12-13-13-15-15-19 times. Continue to decrease for the armholes; you will cast off the neck before you are finished decreasing for the armholes.

Neck decreases:
AT THE SAME TIME, when the piece measures 27-29-30-32-33-35 cm and the next row is from the right side,
cast off the middle 10-12-14-14-16-18 stitches for the neck. The shoulders are finished separately – place the first
stitches on a thread (left shoulder).
Continue to decrease for the armholes and decrease 1 stitch for the neck on each row from the right side 9 times.
When all the decreases for the armhole and neck are finished there are 7-8-9-10-11-12 stitches on the shoulder.
Work until the piece measures 41-43-45-47-49-51 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side.

Left shoulder:
Place the stitches from the thread on circular needle size 5 mm. Start from the wrong side and continue to decrease for the armhole and decrease 1 stitch for the neck on each row from the right side 9 times. When all the decreases
for the armhole and neck are finished there are 7-8-9-10-11-12 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 41-43-45-47-49-51 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side.

BACK PIECE:


Brim:
With white color on US 6 (4 mm) needles cast on 84 (92,100, 108, 116, 132) stitches.
REMEMBER the first st is always slip, the last is always knit.
Row 1: sl st, K2, P2, K3, turn work.
Row 2: sl st, P2, K2, P2, K, turn work.
Repeat 1-2 rows for 7 times total (14 rows).

Body:
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch on US 8 (5mm).
Work stockinette stitch until until the piece measures 21-23-24-25-26-26 cm from the cast-on edge, with the next row from the right side.

Armholes decreases:
Cast off 2-2-4-4-6-6 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the armholes = 66-72-76-82-86-98 stitches.

Right shoulder:
Place the stitches from the thread on circular needle size 5 mm. Start from the wrong side and continue to decrease for the armhole and decrease 1 stitch for the neck on each row from the right side 5-5-6-6-7-7 times. When all the decreases for the armhole and neck are finished there are 7-8-9-10-11-12 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 41-43-45-47-49-51 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side.

Assembly:
Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams, leaving a 5 cm split at the bottom.
Sleeve-edges:
Start at the side seam, from the right side. Use circular needle size 4 mm and knit up 76-84-92-96-104-116 stitches around the armhole – number of stitches must be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work the other sleeve-edge in the same way.

Neck:
Start at the shoulder seam, from the right side. Use circular needle size 4 mm and knit up 92-100-104-108-112-116 stitches around the neck – number of stitches must be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl.

Materials Needed:

  • Aran / Medium (4) yarn: red (120g), white (30g)
  • Crochet hook 5 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
SK=skip
REP=repeat
ST=stitch
sl st = slip stitch
DEC= decrease / may also be called “crochet two together”

Gauge (hook size 5 mm(H): 14 dc and 7 rows = 10 cm in double crochet

Pattern:

Beret

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first st), dc 11 in the circle.
Chain 3 at beginning of each row count as one stitch.
Pull the tail to close the magic circle, join with sl st on top of chain 3. (12st)

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st. (24 st)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (36 st)

Rnd 4: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 2 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (48 st)

Rnd 5: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 3 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (60 st)

Rnd 6: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 4 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (72 st)

Rnd 7: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 5 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (84 st)

Rnd 8: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 6 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (96 st)

Rnd 9: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 7 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (108 st)

Rnd 10: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next 8 st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (120 st)

Stop here and measure – should be around 30 cm (12in)

Rnd 11: ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st. (120 st)

Rnd 12: ch 3, dc in the next 7st, *dc dec, dc in the next 8 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (108 st)

Rnd 13: ch 3, dc in the next 6st, *dc dec, dc in the next 7 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (96 st)

Rnd 14: ch 3, dc in the next 5st, *dc dec, dc in the next 6 st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (84 st)

Rnd 15: ch3, dc in the next 4 sts, *dc dec, dc in the next 5 st, rep from* around, join with sl st. (72 st)

Rnd 16: ch3, dc in the next 3 sts, *dc dec, dc in the next 4 st, rep from* around, join with sl st. (60 st)

Stop here and measure – should be around 17 cm (6.5in)

Rnd 17 (change the color): ch, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (60 st)
Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.

Sports (make a few different sizes spots)

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first st), dc 11 in the circle. (12st)

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st. (24 st)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st, repeat from* around, join with sl st. (36 st)

Place spots as you like and sew them.

Materials you’ll need for this colorwork hat knitting project

  • 16 inch (40 cm) US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles or US 4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles.
  • Yarn Drops Nepal (65% wool, 35% alpaca) 82 yds/1.75oz (75 m/50 g or any aran weight yarn.
    COLORS:
    Black 8903 – 1 skein ;
    Light blue 8913 – 1 skein;
    Goldenrod 2923 -1 skein;
    Fog 8907 – 1 skein.

STICH GLOSSARY

Cute Lab Type Hat Knitting Pattern

BRIM:
With Light blue color cast on 96 stitches. Join in round, making sure not to twist stitches, place marker to indicate beginning of round.
1st rnd: Work 1×1 rib (k1, p1) around.
Work 1×1 ribbing for 40 rnds or near 5,5” (14-15 cm), inc 12 sts (M1) evenly across last rnd = 108 sts.
Then start to knit in stockinette stitch Body of hat (A 1).

BODY OF HAT:
Knit rnds 1 to 36 of A 1, reading rows from right to left, noting 36-st rep will be worked 3 times.

SHAPE TOP:
Knit rnds 1 to 14 of A2, reading rows from right to left, noting 9-st rep will be worked 12 times.
1st rnd: * K7. K2tog. Rep from * around. 96 sts.
2nd rnd: Work even in pattern.
3rd rnd: *K6. K2tog. Rep from * around. 84 sts.
4th rnd: Work even in pattern.
5th rnd: *K5. K2tog. Rep from * around. 72 sts.
6th rnd: Work even in pattern.
7th rnd: *K4. K2tog. Rep from * around. 60 sts.
8th rnd: Work even in pattern.
9th rnd: * K3. K2tog. Rep from * around. 48 sts.
10th rnd: Work even in pattern.
11th rnd: *K2. K2tog. K2. Rep from * around. 36 sts.

POM POM:
Make one pom pom with Black color (or any other, if you like) and a diameter of approx 7-8cm.
Sew the pom pom to the top of the hat.
